Brittany Slow Travel Through Small Ports and Crepe Towns

Most visitors see Brittany in a rush: Mont Saint-Michel at the border, a night in Saint-Malo, a dash down to Carnac, and home. Brittany slow travel works differently, and it solves the real problem with a fast trip here, which is that the region's best hours happen at low tide, at a harbour bar at 7 p.m., or on a Sunday morning market you will never see from a motorway.

I have spent parts of six summers and two very wet Novembers in Brittany, mostly in small towns with one creperie, one boulangerie and a ferry timetable pinned to the tabac door. Here is how to plan a slower week or two that actually feels like the place.

Where to base yourself for Brittany slow travel

Brittany has more than 2,700 kilometres of coastline, so trying to see "all of it" is how people end up driving four hours a day. Pick one or two bases and stay at least four nights in each. Three areas work especially well:

  • The Gulf of Morbihan. Vannes has a walled old town and a good train link, and the small towns of Arradon and Larmor-Baden sit right on the inland sea with its 40 or so islands. Boats to the Ile aux Moines run every 30 minutes in summer and take five minutes.
  • The Crozon peninsula. Rugged, quiet and almost car free on its coastal paths. Camaret-sur-Mer has a working harbour, and Morgat a sheltered beach for swimming.
  • The Pink Granite Coast. Ploumanac'h and Perros-Guirec are busy in August but lovely in June and September, with a 5 kilometre customs officers' path past the pink rocks.

If you prefer inland, the Nantes to Brest canal and the town of Josselin give you castles, towpaths and almost no crowds. A night or two there makes a good break between two coastal bases.

Getting around without rushing

A car helps on the Crozon peninsula and in central Brittany, but the coast is more reachable by public transport than people assume. TGV trains run from Paris to Rennes in about 1 hour 30, and on to Vannes, Quimper or Brest in roughly 3 to 4 hours total. From there, regional trains and the BreizhGo coach network reach most coastal towns, with single fares often between 2 and 5 euros. My guide to TER regional trains in France covers ticket types and the timetable quirks that also apply here.

Bicycles are the other answer. The Velodyssey route crosses Brittany from Roscoff and then follows the Nantes to Brest canal towpath, which is flat, shaded and easy to ride in short sections. Many towns rent electric bikes for 25 to 35 euros a day.

One rule worth repeating: check the tide tables before every coastal plan. Tidal ranges here reach 12 metres in places, and a walk across to a tidal island like the Ile Callot near Carantec can be cut off within an hour of the turn.

What to eat, and how to order it

Breton food is simpler than its reputation, and better. A few things to know before you sit down:

  • Galettes are savoury, crepes are sweet. Galettes use buckwheat flour and are usually filled with egg, ham and cheese (a "complete"), costing 9 to 13 euros. Crepes made with wheat flour follow for dessert.
  • Drink cider from a bowl. A "bolee" of local brut cider is the normal pairing, and a 75 cl bottle in a creperie runs 10 to 16 euros.
  • Kouign-amann is worth the detour to Douarnenez, the town that claims it. Expect butter, caramelised sugar and very little restraint.
  • Oysters come cheapest at the source. In Cancale, stalls on the harbour wall sell a dozen for around 9 to 14 euros, eaten standing up with lemon.

Creperies often close between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and many in small towns shut one or two days a week outside July and August. Lunch is the main meal for a lot of locals, so the menu du jour at lunch is usually your best value meal of the day.

The common advice I would ignore

You will often read that Brittany is a summer only destination and that the rest of the year is grey and closed. I disagree, with a reason: the shoulder months are when Brittany slow travel works best. In late May, June and September, sea temperatures are comfortable enough for a quick swim, small inns drop rates by 20 to 40 percent from their August prices, and you can walk a 15 kilometre stretch of the GR34 coastal path and meet a dozen people instead of several hundred.

Yes, it rains. It also clears within hours, often several times a day, and the light after a squall over the Crozon cliffs is the reason painters came here in the first place. Pack a proper rain jacket and treat weather as a timetable, not a verdict. The places that do close in winter are mostly beach bars and campsites, not the bakeries, markets and harbour restaurants you will actually use.

A sample slow week in southern Brittany

This is a week I would happily repeat, based in Vannes for four nights and on the Quiberon peninsula for three:

  1. Day 1: Arrive by train, walk the ramparts and the Wednesday or Saturday market in Vannes.
  2. Day 2: Ferry to the Ile aux Moines, rent bikes for 12 to 15 euros and circle the island in about two hours.
  3. Day 3: Bus to Auray, walk down to the port of Saint-Goustan for lunch by the water.
  4. Day 4: A slow morning, then the Carnac alignments in the late afternoon when tour buses have left.
  5. Day 5: Move to Quiberon, walk the wild western coast in the evening.
  6. Day 6: Ferry to Belle-Ile, about 45 minutes, and spend the day around Sauzon.
  7. Day 7: Market morning, sardines from the cannery shop, train home.

None of these days needs more than an hour of transport. That is the point. For other regions planned on the same principle, browse our France regions guides.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Brittany?

A week covers one coast properly, such as the Gulf of Morbihan and Quiberon, or the north coast from Saint-Malo to Perros-Guirec. Two weeks lets you add a second region without long transfers. Trying to see the whole peninsula in under ten days usually means more driving than walking.

Can you visit Brittany without a car?

Yes, especially in the south and along the north coast. Trains reach Vannes, Auray, Quimper, Saint-Malo and Lannion, and regional coaches cover most coastal towns for a few euros per trip. The Crozon peninsula and central Brittany are the hardest parts to reach without a car.

What is the best month for a quiet trip to Brittany?

June and September are the strongest choices. Days are long, most restaurants and ferries run full schedules, and prices sit well below August levels. May is also lovely, but watch for the long weekends around French bank holidays, when local families fill the coast.
